Leafcutter John & Talvin Singh at Big Chill Festival 7/8/09
A couple of weeks ago I completed a remix of Talvin Singh’s ‘Traveler’ from his Mercury Prize winning album ‘OK’ which is being reissued as part of Universal’s 50th anniversary. I was floored by the beauty of the string parts supplied to me and had enormous fun stretching them out to form a shifting drone backbone for the track. I also used them to make percussive elements for later in the track. I thought it would be great if Talvin played some Tabla on the remix and after a couple of late night Skype sessions I was the happy recipient of multiple takes of Talvin’s amazing playing. I’m not just saying that, he is truly fantastic.
Over the last couple of weeks we’ve stayed in contact and when I was offered a gig at this years Big Chill I thought it would be a great opportunity to work in a live context with Talvin and get to know him a bit better. We have been exchaging material for a while, having fun and working out a set, I’ve booked a hire car so we are set to blast off!
We perch on the ‘Stop The City Stage’ between 8:00pm to 10:00pm. We’ll do a solo set each and then a duo to finish off. Visuals will be provided by the grand immersive folks at dFuse.
Happy camping!
